Shutterstock bought Amper's AI to power search, not just scoring

The audio task

A video editor working inside a stock-media library wants a royalty-free backing track that fits an exact runtime and mood without leaving the platform to license a separate composer's work. Amper Music, an early AI music-generation company, built a tool for exactly that: users selected a genre and length and Amper generated and let them edit an original instrumental track, before Shutterstock acquired the company's assets.

What the documents show

Shutterstock's own investor-relations release, dated 11 November 2020, states the company "announced the acquisition of certain assets from Amper Music," described as "a leading AI-driven music platform which enables users to create and customize original music by leveraging over one million individual audio samples." The release states the deal was meant to strengthen "content search and discovery of tracks composed by Shutterstock's community of artists as well as editing tools," and quotes Amper CEO Drew Silverstein saying the acquisition would "bring Amper's Creative AI to Shutterstock's global customer base." The release explicitly states "terms of the transaction were not disclosed." Amper's own archived product page from shortly after the deal describes the tool it was selling directly to customers before the acquisition: users could "select genre and set length," let the "AI make your music," then "edit and tweak," with the page advertising the output as "royalty free" under a "global perpetual license."

Rights status

Shutterstock's release describes acquiring "certain assets," language that does not confirm the entire company, its full customer base, or every prior licence obligation transferred intact; it also does not disclose a price, so any specific dollar figure attached to this deal elsewhere is not supported by Shutterstock's own announcement. Amper's pre-acquisition royalty-free and perpetual-licence claims were the vendor's own marketing description of its output licence, not an independently audited legal opinion.

What to check before you use it

This is an editorial checklist. If you hold tracks generated by Amper's standalone product before the acquisition, confirm with Shutterstock whether the original perpetual licence still applies, since the standalone product no longer operates independently. Do not cite a specific acquisition price for this deal; the primary release states none was disclosed.

• If you have older Amper-generated tracks, does your original perpetual licence remain honored post-acquisition?

The acquisition folded an early text-to-music generator's search and editing capability into a much larger licensed-content platform, but Shutterstock's own release is careful to describe it as an asset purchase of undisclosed size, not a full corporate merger.
