BandLab's SongStarter gives away ideas, not their rights

The audio task

A beginner facing an empty timeline, with no chords, no drum pattern, and no arrangement idea yet, often needs a starting point more than a finished song. BandLab built SongStarter for exactly that moment: a way to generate a short chord-and-drum idea a new user can drop into its browser-based studio and build on, aimed at people for whom the blank-project problem, not a technical mixing task, is the barrier to starting.

What the documents show

BandLab's help center article describes SongStarter as “an AI-powered idea generator that offers a diverse selection of pre-made, customizable song ideas spanning various genres,” operated by picking a genre and clicking Generate, then adjusting genre, mood, tempo, and key, or regenerating for new variations. An archived capture of bandlab.com/songstarter shows the feature's page was already live on BandLab's site by 6 January 2022, indicating SongStarter dates to at least early 2022 even though the current help article was last revised more recently. Neither document describes the model or training data behind the generated ideas, and neither publishes a technical specification of how “pre-made” and “customizable” combine in the output.

Rights status

BandLab's help article states this plainly: “While you won't own the rights to the generated track, you can still use it without incurring any fees or royalties to the original creator.” That sentence draws a specific line: no ownership transfers to the user, but BandLab states no payment or attribution obligation attaches to using the starting idea either. The article does not say whether that changes once a user substantially rewrites or rearranges the generated material, and does not address a scenario where a generated idea is distributed as a finished commercial release rather than built upon inside BandLab.

What to check before you use it

This is an editorial checklist. Before releasing a track built from a SongStarter idea, treat the help article's language literally: the user does not own the generated starting point, so a release built closely on an unmodified idea inherits that same non-ownership; confirm how much the finished track has transformed the generated chords and drums; and check BandLab's current terms of service for any update to this guidance, since a help-center article can change independently of the platform's core terms.

• Does the current BandLab terms of service state anything different from the help article about SongStarter ownership?
• Is the track intended for commercial release, where the “no ownership” language may matter more than for a personal or practice project?

SongStarter is a clear example of a generative feature where the vendor states the ownership answer directly rather than leaving it implied: no rights to the generated idea, but no fee either, a combination worth reading in full rather than assuming from either half alone.
