iZotope's RX rebalances a mix for repair, not a remix

The audio task

A mix or mastering engineer sometimes inherits a stereo file with no multitrack session: a vocal sitting too far forward, drums buried under a guitar bed, or a dialogue track full of room noise. The practical task is to turn that stereo file back into adjustable pieces long enough to fix a balance problem or lift speech out of clutter, without a original session to reopen.

What the documents show

iZotope's RX 12 product page describes Music Rebalance and Dialogue Isolate as modules that split existing audio into adjustable elements inside a 'Stems View,' powered by what the page calls updated neural nets. Music Rebalance is framed around instant volume changes to vocals, bass, drums, and instruments in a finished mix; Dialogue Isolate is framed around pulling speech out of noise and reverb for post-production and podcast cleanup. A companion iZotope blog post, dated 15 May 2024, adds that the RX 12 version of Music Rebalance separates a mix into vocals, bass, percussion, and an 'other' category, and it names four uses: real-time balance changes, targeted restoration on one element, parallel processing blended back against the original, and stem-level spectral repair before recombining. Neither document states that the separated stems are a substitute multitrack session, and neither claims the estimate is audibly perfect on every source.

Rights status

Both are living product pages describing software function, not licences to third-party recordings. They say nothing about whether a user has the right to remix or redistribute the underlying recording once it has been split into stems, because RX operates on audio the user already possesses; the module changes the balance of an existing file, and does not itself grant, waive, or clear any rights in that recording. What to check before you use it

This is an editorial checklist. Confirm which RX tier includes Music Rebalance and Dialogue Isolate, since iZotope splits modules across Elements, Standard, and Advanced. Treat rebalanced stems as an estimate for repair or remastering, not as a replacement multitrack for a remix release. Before shipping a rebalanced master, listen for artifacts around dense overlapping frequencies, which the blog post flags as the case where 'careful processing' matters most. Keep the original file archived alongside any rebalanced version so the edit can be reversed.

Music Rebalance and Dialogue Isolate answer a restoration and remastering question, not a stem-licensing question: they estimate what a mix element sounded like in isolation so an engineer can adjust it, and the vendor's own materials frame that as an editing aid rather than a recovered original.
