Toontrack's Tap2Find matches grooves, it doesn't compose them

The audio task

A songwriter has a rhythm in their head, tapped out on a pad or a table, and wants to find a real drum groove close to it without programming a beat note by note or scrolling through a library one preset at a time. The task is retrieval by example, matching an idea to an existing performance, not generating a new pattern from a description.

What the documents show

Toontrack's own EZdrummer 3 product page describes Tap2Find in exactly those terms: 'Tap it in and let EZdrummer 3 list its best matches' against its built-in MIDI library, which the page says was 'performed on electronic kits by professional drummers' and organized by song structure and genre. The page does not explain the matching algorithm beyond describing a ranked list of results, and it does not describe Tap2Find as composing anything new. Toontrack's End-User License Agreement, last updated 22 June 2026, states that a user 'may use a Product, or any part of a Product, including parts of sound libraries, only in the context of creating musical arrangements' and that the resulting 'User Created Content may be commercialized and distributed without attribution or additional fees.' The same agreement prohibits extracting or assembling 'any single preset, sound or MIDI file' for resale, assembling grooves as 'loops for resale or other form of distribution,' and using any part of a Product 'as a source to develop or train any artificial intelligence technology.'

Rights status

A groove that Tap2Find surfaces is licensed MIDI content from Toontrack's library, not a composition the matching feature originates. Once embedded in a finished arrangement, the EULA licenses that arrangement for commercial release without extra fees, but the same document withholds the right to pull the matched MIDI file back out and redistribute it on its own, whether as a preset pack, a loop library, or AI training data. This reflects the EULA as retrieved on 16 September 2026.

What to check before you use it

This is an editorial checklist. Confirm whether the specific MIDI content surfaced by Tap2Find ships with the base EZdrummer 3 licence or with a separately purchased expansion, since add-on packs can carry their own terms. Do not extract a matched groove file and share or resell it outside the finished track, since the EULA treats that as a prohibited use regardless of how the groove was found. Note the EULA's revision date before relying on a specific clause, since Toontrack can and does update it.

• Does the matched groove come from content covered by the base EULA or a separately licensed expansion?
• Is the groove being kept inside a finished arrangement rather than extracted and redistributed on its own?
• Is the EULA version being relied on the one currently in effect, given Toontrack's stated update date?

Tap2Find answers a search problem, matching a tapped idea to an existing, professionally performed groove, and Toontrack's own materials are clear that the result is licensed library content embedded in a new work, not an original composition the feature has authored.
