Musiio, a Singapore-founded company, built that search and tagging technology for the music industry as a B2B service before SoundCloud bought it.

What the documents show

Musiio's own announcement, dated 3 May 2022, states that "SoundCloud announced it has acquired Musiio, the artificial intelligence company at the forefront of machine learning technology," and that Musiio's technology "focuses on B2B audio reference search (AI that can 'listen' to music), automated tagging, and playlisting tools for the music industry." The release quotes SoundCloud president Eliah Seton saying the deal helps the company "better understand how music is moving in a proprietary way," and states co-founders Hazel Savage and Aron Pettersson joined SoundCloud as vice presidents while the acquired team retained its positions. A later product update dated 23 August 2022 describes "Musiio by SoundCloud" releasing an upgraded mood-tagging model that assigns up to four of 41 moods per track "with 95%+ accuracy," sold to companies across the music industry as a tagging product, continuing as a B2B service after the deal.

Rights status

Neither document states or implies that Musiio's tagging technology determines royalty payouts, streaming splits, or any creator's compensation; the announcement describes a discovery and search capability sold to business customers, and the follow-up post confirms Musiio kept operating as a separate B2B product line inside SoundCloud rather than being folded invisibly into the consumer app's backend.

What to check before you use it

This is an editorial checklist. If you license or supply catalogue metadata to SoundCloud or a Musiio client, confirm current data-handling terms directly, since neither 2022 post addresses long-term data retention. Do not assume AI tagging accuracy claims like "95%+" generalize beyond the specific mood classifier described.
