An AI master's default loudness may not match a platform's

Spotify names -14 LUFS directly; LANDR and eMastered treat that number as a reference, not a rule.

The audio task

A producer delivering a track through an automated mastering service wants to know whether the loudness that service settles on will match what the destination streaming platform actually expects, or whether a second pass will be needed before delivery.

What the documents show

Spotify's own artist guidance states it adjusts tracks to -14 dB LUFS according to the ITU 1770 standard, and recommends mastering to a target of -14 integrated LUFS with true peak kept below -1 dB. LANDR's own page on loudness lists -14 dB LUFS for Spotify and YouTube and -16 dB LUFS for Apple Music, but explicitly advises against chasing a specific number, stating that the right loudness is less about hitting a specific LUFS number and more about making a track sound balanced, dynamic, and engaging, and recommending 3 to 6 dB of headroom on the mix bus instead. eMastered's blog article on loudness, published 17 July 2025, states that Spotify sets the audio level around -14 LUFS, names -1 dBTP as a peak ceiling, and notes that Spotify itself offers a user-selectable normalization setting of -19, -14, or -11 LUFS, while not stating specific targets for Apple Music or YouTube.

Rights status

This is a documentation comparison, not a rights question: no licence or ownership claim is at issue here, only whether an automated tool's default output matches a distributor's own stated target. Spotify's own page is the only one of the three that states its normalization figure as a fact about its own platform rather than as guidance about someone else's platform; the two mastering services describe Spotify's number as a reference point, and one of them mentions Apple Music's different figure only by way of a summary page, not Apple's own.

What to check before you use it

This is an editorial method, not a claim that any single LUFS number is correct. Before delivering a track mastered by an automated service, check the destination platform's own current loudness guidance directly, rather than a mastering tool's page about that platform, since a tool's citation of a competitor's number can lag behind an update. Confirm whether the destination platform offers a selectable normalization setting, since a track authored to one setting may sound different under another.

  • Does the destination platform's own help page confirm the LUFS figure the mastering tool assumed?
  • Is the platform's normalization setting fixed, or selectable by the listener or uploader?
  • Would a true-peak overshoot at the mastering stage cause audible distortion after the platform's own normalization?

An automated mastering chain's default and a streaming platform's own published target are two separate documents that happen to agree only when someone checks. Spotify's own guidance and two mastering services' pages mostly point at the same -14 LUFS figure here, but checking each platform's own current page directly, rather than trusting a tool's summary of it, is the method this comparison is meant to establish.
